This paper surveys keyloggers and provides a real-time coding demonstration to illustrate the working behind keylogging. The paper traces the evolution of keylogging technology and classifies the tools into four broad categories – hardware, software, remote and electromagnetic – with attack vectors and operational risks. Hardware keyloggers operate in a physical connection or via a wireless link, while software keyloggers operate at the application or OS level typically through phishing campaigns and malicious downloads. Remote and electromagnetic variants push this further still, either exfiltrating stolen data across a network or picking up ambient signals from a distance. A working Python implementation is included to illustrate how keyboard input is recorded. The paper also looks at the current threat landscape wherein keyloggers are increasingly folded into sophisticated malware suites, and discusses their dual-use nature in both cybercrime and digital forensics. In the end, the study argues for early detection, user awareness and solid defensive practices that are able to help protect individuals and organizations from this kind of covert threat.
